This website is about the ongoing fight for the right to vote. Universal suffrage has been a fundamental struggle throughout the history of our nation given the exclusion of so many people – women, people of color, religious groups not in favor, people living with disabilities, prisoners and returning citizens, and even college students. I participated in many efforts to win and protect voting rights including the 1966 Meredith March Against Fear from Memphis Tennessee to Jackson Mississippi. For this march I had my cameras with me. The negatives were filed away for decades until the Obama administration when I produced a portfolio of 22 archival digital prints of photographs I took during the Meredith march. Portfolios were used to raise funds for the re-election of President Obama and to emphasize the ongoing need to protect and expand voting rights.

While sales were modest (we were late in getting the portfolio done) the portfolio has found its way into major national collections.

These include:

• The Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale
• The Special Collection on Southern History and Culture of the Vanderbilt University Library
• The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts
• The Mississippi Civil Rights Museum
• Penn State University Library Special Collections
• Princeton University Library
• Stanford University Library Special Collections
• The Pennsylvania ACLU and several private collections.

I still have 30 portfolios that can be used to support groups in battleground states that want to protect our fragile democracy from the right-wing autocrats who would create an authoritarian state if they get back in power. I plan to offer the portfolios as gifts to people who donate at least $5000 to groups that are doing the work we all need to succeed. You support democracy, progress and inclusion and you get a gift. If you wish we can even help you find a library, college or museum you can donate a portfolio to (if you do that, I will print a couple of images not in the portfolio for you).

Battleground states will be battlegrounds in 2024 because the Trump crypto fascists, misogynists, authoritarians and the Supreme Court know they cannot win a fair election and so resort to voter suppression, lies, gerrymandering and intimidation.
